Nancy Riedell - Portfolio of Works

Because I had to have hand surgery recently, I was forced to change my painting technique. I was not able to tear off tape to create a border, tear sheets of paper, hold a brush tightly, or make small finite lines. I decided to paint large florals that would take up an entire sheet of watercolor paper (22 " x 30") with no borders. I am very happy with the outcome and have found this experience to be very freeing. I hope you enjoy this collection as much as I have enjoyed creating it.

This new collection, Beach Umbrellas, was inspired after spending a day at Rio Del Mar beach in Santa Cruz county and seeing the wonderfully bright beach umbrellas. They really brightened up an otherwise average looking beach. I am always grateful about living so close to the beach where inspiration always manages to find me as I see beauty from sunsets to beach umbrellas.

Those of us who are fortunate enough to live near the coast are in absolute awe of the power of the ocean and the waves it produces. I am especially infatuated with the waves, their size, strength, and utter power. I captured a series of powerful waves during a high surf advisory warning in the Santa Cruz/Monterey California area in January 2010. These waves were measured between 18' - 22' by the weather service. So, instead of running from the coast, I ran to it to capture these huge waves. I hope that you enjoy this collection as I continue to add to it.

This collection is a series of sunsets and sunrises in Africa. Most of them are from Namibia where my son and his wife spent their honeymoon. I was blessed to inherit a daughter-in-law with an incredible eye and who allowed me to use her pictures.

These paintings measure 15 1/2" x 22", which are also called "half-sheets."  I hope you enjoy this collection as much as I am enjoying painting it!
